Peltier or Air cooling?

Hey guys, just curious if anyone can help me here. Alright here we go:

I currently have a "Classic" Slot A - Athlon 700 (.18). I wanna shoot for 1000mhz or so, I have not taken off the casing yet, but i plan on it. Now, about heatsinks, im thinking about going for a Alpha heatsink. Theres the "Computernerd, Heavy Metal Cooler(modified alpha)" this has the added L2 cache spacers and can be mounted directly to the core of the athlon:Heavy-Metal Cooler . Then theres the Leufken Peltier Rig w/ the AlphaP3125 Heatsink (comes with 72watt tec):
Leufken 4th one down.

My question is: What provides the best performance for overclocking? and with the Leufken Peltier Rig does the cold plate directly touch the core? or does it mount to the heatplate? What do i do about the L2 Spacers? sorry, i feel like an idiot here...

I want to reach the highest possible speed out of my processor without the use of watercooling. Also, Sorry.. What would be a good GFD to buy for an Abit Ka7?

Im not too worried about power i have a 400watt P/S.

I don't think it is wise to spend any more money on an outdated CPU like the old Athlon - no matter what you do you may not be able to overclock it if is a dud. But before you get a new Athlon, first carefully open the case and look at the CPU and see if it is not really a 900 in a 700 case. I believe there were a number of the old Athlons like that. If you are lucky, the plastic case will say 700, but the chip inside will say 900 instead of 700.

Personally, I think the salad days of the Peltier are long gone, with newer CPU's being so cheap and such good overclockers, unless you just want to mess with a Pelt for fun. Remember that there is a lot more to a good PC than just a fast CPU.

Ok, your core is most likely a 900 core because you have the .18mu. I have a 700mhz Athlon Classic .25mu core (650mhz athlon core) and it's running at 935mhz. You MUST remeber to slash the cache divider to 2/5 or you WON'T reach speeds above 800mhz. As for the alpha 3125, it won't even fit on your processor, you need the leufken's K7125 alpha kit and the alpha P7125 heatsink. if you o/c to 1ghz using the peltier setup (which it is very possible you will be able to) you must slash your cache divider to 1/3.
Running my 700 @ 935mhz I'm only using a regular alpha p7125 heatsink with 2 42cfm fans. No peltier, and I have my heatsink mounted to the thermal plate rather than directly to the die. Thus I don't need to use any cache chips. and btw, the leufken's k7125 peltier kit is designed to be used with the heat transfer plate still attached to the core.

Isnt the K7 casing the same as a Pentium2 casing? ahh i thought the P3125 alpha would work with the K7
From the specs on the HMC:
"This extraordinary performance makes it a preferred solution for cooling classic Athlon CPUs running at 900 MHz or higher"
says classic athlons for the P3125 Heatsink.
I would buy a new processor/motherboard ,but i dont have a job yet, so i wanna push my current athlon to last till this summer.
Is the difference between the P3125 and the K7125 the cut notch in it for the power cable?
I have plenty of room for these heatsinks, AbitKa7 only using 2 of the 4 ram slots.

my main question is what provides more performace?
would the peltier setup (72watt) provide more performace on the heatplate vs the HeavyMetalCooler on the core?

well i went peltier on my athlon 650 with a 750 core , was able to get it up to 950 mhz running at room temp... either set up is over kill really, if you do go with the peliter i would sugest investing in some delta black lables if you can stand the noise.. i just posted a message on water cooling you may want to watch that thread too... a water cooling setup with a peliter could get you way below room temp . well i hope i helped a little...


p.s there is a website i will try to find it that has a data base on peoples chips what week they are and what the core is... as soon as i can find it i will post it for you
