Peltier coolers?

Just out of curiosity, has anyone used Peltier coolers on their chips? I know that the power required can be a bit much (I heard 40 watts somewhere) so this question may become hypothetical, but anywho, I just want to know if anyone has tried using a Peltier cooler to cool their chip and had it work.

I did but had to take it out when the P-3 came out. This is because the heat contact surface became too small to mount the peltier. There's just too much hassle involve with peltier considering the price of CPU's has gone down drastically since the days of P-II.

So overall it would be better to get a good heatsink & case fan system going, rather than use a Peltier...

Thanks for the info folks.

You have to get more than a 40 watt peltier, but if you have a powerful enough one and like good watercooling or air, it will cool much better than a heatsink/fan, if you take care of all the precautions. It is also more expensive though.

Back then, I used to have a 55w peltier on a C400@600 at 2.3v and it kept the chip at room temp at max load. I wasn't too careful installing the insulation however and condensation occured with water droplets forming around the slotket. Costs can add up quickly if you're just using stock eq., you may have to upgrade to bigger heatsink (I used an Alpha), a more powerful and probably louder cpu fan like a Delta, a copper plate (I used a 1/4" thick one), foam lining and silicon sealant for insulation.

And if your cpu fan or the peltier element itself should happen to fail, or if your power supply wasn't really up to the job at delivering the required amps, expect catastrophic results such as your system going up in a ball of flame. :D :D :D
