peltier, can you tell me about it?

I see these things for sale and I always see someone giving a warning about them. What is the deal. They are not that expensive. Shoot about $25 will get you one. What are the dangers and the benefits? thanks!

Not worth the trouble.. if the heatsink fails on top of the peltier element, it can burn up.. the benefit is really COLD cpu.. needs some mods to fit on some cpu..

I actually tried to get one to work. The problem is that you really so need water cooling and I wasn't going to go down that route. I just can't imagine having water running through my system and the cost of the setup is out of this world. With the price of cpus falling as fast as they are, I would suggest getting a good heatsink and fan. I got my PIII700 to 980 with an Alpha cooler.

If you have a good HS, I dont think a fan failure will cause it to burn up. I ran a 55w pelt with my alpha pep66 with the fan disconnected and the pelt was still cold. Of course I wouldn`t run my pelt for hours with out a fan 🙂.
IF you get a pelt you need a few large fans to push all the hot air out of the case. My computer puts out so much hot air that I don`t need a heater 😱

Pelts also require a lot of power so a beefed up power supply is usually needed. Insulation must also be completely water tight or condensation can form and corrode the processor.

With a peltier and air cooling via a _good_ heatsink/fan, you'll be able to cool your CPU to about room temperature. A water-cooled heatsink will allow you to get more extreme cooling. Listen to what the others have to say. Insulation to prevent condensation is VERY IMPORTANT! (I've had a bad experience with unexpected condensation) Unless you want to do this for fun and don't mind spending the time and money, it isn't worth the trouble. I did have time and was willing to spend the money, so I set up a peltier just so I could run my Celeron 300A at 504 in the summer instead of 464. Now, after having water drip onto my video card in humid weather, I'm not going to fool with the peltier again until I have plenty of time to figure out how to properly insulate the whole setup.

Peltier's aren't easy to use like heatsinks that you buy and just stick on your CPU with some thermal grease. You should read as many procedures and experiences as you can find - that should help you the most if you still want to get a peltier.

Thanks for all of the advice. It sounds like too much trouble to me. I would be better off buying a faster cpu. My duron 600 runs at 900mhz now anyway. I was just curious and I appreciate the time you guys took to post the information.

look at my sig for an example of what a $12 fan will getcha. much quieter and cheaper than an ALPHa!

btw out of 5 chips (700e retail), 4 of them do over 1000mhz. only 1 "only" does 933mhz.
