Pelican case for a PC?

Hello forum.

I am trying to work out the best way to take a PC on a plane, and I thought of removing all the parts and putting them in a foam-filled pelican case.
I could then put the empty case in a big suitcase (i have one that'll fit) and check them both.

Is there anyone with experience doing this that can offer advice?

If the best option is a pelican case, how big of a case will I need?

I have a standard ATX mobo, regular sized psu, an 10-11" gpu, an soundblaster card, a single optical drive, and a 2.5" hard drive.

If a pelican case sounds like a terrible idea, or you know some trick to get your stuff to it's destination in one piece, please feel free to offer your thoughts!

thanks to all for considering my conundrum.

Hi irsei, and welcome to Anandtech Forums.

Those cases can be pretty expensive. Have you considered switching to a small form factor system? You can easily build a micro ATX box that fits inside suitcases with padding, or even inside a rolling carry-on. Even smaller are mini ITX systems, though you'd have to lose the sound card.

I've had luck transporting complete systems by just filling the interior with anti-static foam blocks to hold everything in place. Alternately you just need to use a lighter, bolted-down CPU cooler or remove the cooler, and remove the graphics card for transportation. There's no need to remove everything, unless your case is flimsy.

You're really not giving us enough info about what you're trying to do. Are you trying to move this PC, like just a one time thing? Does the PC case need to go with it or do you plan to just buy another when you get there? Why not just ship it there? If it's just those parts you mentioned you could easily put them into a suitcase with some good padding/packaging, not sure why you'd need a pelican case (whatever that is).

Pelican is a company that makes travel cases for delicate equipment.
I am in japan now, but travelling to the US with my PC, possibly several times.
Eventually, I will also move back.

I brought a pc with my on the plane and I packed it in a box with foam,
inside of another box, but the HDD got the click of death after the pla e trip.
I want to aviod breaking anymore parts because those airline baggage people just toss your stuff around like it was all clothes.

I will take my pc case with me, but I am worried about the possible effect of impact on the mobo if it is attached to the case.(greater amount of contact with shaking case=more impact on the parts inside.)

so you all think I'll be okay if I just stuff the inside with foam and stuff the whole thing in a suitcase?
Or just remove the gpu and what? Put the gpu in my carryon luggage?
Does the airport security get uptight about random pcbs hanging out in your carryon?
