you can see my system specs below, and i was wondering about upgrading the old sli with a single new gtx460 or similar current day midrange card. will the old asus mobo support these new cards, or are they backward compatible with my older platform?

New cards will work just fine in your motherboard. PCI Express 2.0 cards are backwards compatible to work in PCI Express 1.0/1.1 slots.
