peer to peer vpn?

I was just wondering if this was possible. I was wanting to setup a vpn so a friend and i can share files and
such. But everything i've seen you need a server. I know you can setup a modem connection to dial to another
computer but i have dsl so i'm not sure how to do this. I dunno if theres a prog that enable this or what?
I'm new to networking so if anybody could give me some pointers it would be appreciated!

Server is a relative word. As long as you have the correct software you should be able to do it just fine. Free S/WAN may be able to do this with Windows, but I dont know for sure.

I looked it up it says its for linux...well i got mandrake dual booted with xp on my one pc...but i don't know
that much about linux.

Ok, I thought Free S/WAN had a Windows port or something. There is some Windows VPN software out there, but other than PPTP I dont know of any free stuff. I dont follow much Windows software

You could purchase the VPN routers from Linksys and then you wouldn't have to worry about a dedicated server to host VPN connections.

Two VPN Linksys routers, one at each end, and you will be set to communicate via your broadband.

If i use the windows vpn software would i have to run it on a stand alone machine like a server?
I was just wondering i'm kinda short on cash right now....i'm just goin for the easy cheap way to do it!
By the way i read the hole hawg story that was funny as hell......lol.
I'd like to start using linux more but it runs kinda funny on my machine so i put it on the back burner for now.

You shouldnt need a dedicated machine, but it will affect performance. The linksys idea is pretty good and that would be the minimum setup for me to even consider it at my home.

Wow i guess i should of looked them up before i spoke...$138 bones a piece isn't that bad. Are these things

Yes, and you only need one VPN Router with any other PC running any VPN client software, but you would still get better response running VPN Routers on both ends. Linksys lists an example online of how to setup using one VPN Router (server) and other 2000/XP PC's as VPN clients.
