Wow, will this cause any sort of uproar as the Vick situation has? Whereas Vick's situation was pure speculation at first, and people hung him at the stake right at the beginning, there is absolute video evidence here of him doing something equally as heinous..albeit legal where it is..

There unlikely will be, but why is that? Is it the actual legality of the situation, Pedro being more likeable, or at least, more personable than Vick, or because dogs are much more likable than...cocks?

This was in the DR where it is legal, so it's not the same as Vick. Vick did it in the US with dogs, which is illegal.

There are reasons why it won't be as big as the Vick thing. Vick was financing a big operation, it's illegal, and dogs are kept as pets whereas, um, cocks aren't. That said, I still think it's disgusting.

Do you think the public perception of Vick would be different if Vick was sponsoring dog fighting in the DR?

The fight takes place in the Coliseo Gallistico de Santo Domingo (Santo Domingo Cockfighting Coliseum) in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic's biggest cockfighting venue. Cockfighting is legal and popular in the Dominican Republic.

Its going to be bad for his PR person, that's for sure. I can't see how MLB could do anything to him though since he wasn't breaking the law. Unless there's some sort of "code of conduct" like the NFL has, but I don't think they do.

I think people would have called it morally reprehensible, but it wouldn't have been a four-month saga and he wouldn't be in jail.

They just attended a fight. Vick was financing an organization and personally killed some of the dogs. Big difference.

Martinez and Marichal laugh before releasing the roosters. The two took part as honorary "soltadores," the word used to describe the person who puts the animal to fight.

considering that if you cut off a chicken's head at just the right point, it will run around just like a normal chicken until it drowns during a rain storm, i don't have much of a problem.

Exactly, there's really nothing to discuss here. They participated in a legal event in another country. Case closed.

That was going to be my next question; anyone know?

If he was a higher profile athlete with big time national endorsements, then yeah, I think there would be somewhat of an uproar and he'd ultimately lose at least some of those endorsements.

But he's not going to be facing any criminal charges, so I can't see it becoming a national debate capped off with an absurd ESPN town hall meeting.

THis kind of stuff is not only common in other countries, it is popular. Personally, chickens are not in the same class as dogs anyway. Not many people have pet chickens.........

but if you go to Thailand and have sex with a 15 year old girl (legal in Thailand), you can be arrested back in the state.... pretty messed up eh?

so you're comparing watching two chickens fight to penetrating underage children? yeah you're right... that is pretty messed up.

i'm not comparing them... they're two totally unrelated observations.

besides... in america, people love dogs and eat chicken.

Our roosters used to fight all the time. We had one wild one that used to fly in and out of the bigger pens, whipping asses left and right.

I never bet, gathered a crowd, or anything like that, but I damn sure watched tons of those fights. Nothing but a (literal) pecking order being established.

Roosters don't mangle each other like dogs do, as long as their spurs are all natural. Real cock fights have either sharpened spurs or even metal spurs.

If he had been born and raised in the DR, and if dog fighting is legal there, then yes.

But that's the thing. What is underage here is not underage in every country.
