They simply measure how many steps you take. You have to calibrate your steps/distance rate. If you run/walk at a different step size, it's not accurate. If you spend 20 times more, you can get a sweet gps one.

They don't work.

However, look at the Garmin Forerunner. Will do GPS tracking that is actually pretty accurate depending on the signal.

Go Right and talk to the Silent Peddler for the Pedometer. You'll Want
to keep this one for most of the game to get some awesome equipment.

I have a Garmin Edge 305 that you could rubber band to your leg. Edge > Forerunner.

I use a Garmin 305 for hiking, running, biking, walking, etc for tracking distance, speed, calories burned, heart-rate, etc. Does a great job but is pricey.
