Peanut Butter Safe to Eat after Buy By Date?

you'll have to taste it

peanut butter (anything oily) can go rancid

try a spoonful, if you like the taste, eat away
if you don't like the taste, throw it away

I know some people who put their PB in the fridge.

And yea, I tasted it and it tastes fine.

Skippy Super Chunky, highly recommended.

I'm just hesitant on eating it because sometimes it tastes fine but it still might not be good anymore, right?

My wife and I used to squabble over where to keep the PB. After she uses it, she puts it in the fridge. After I use it, I put it in the cupboard. But it's a lost cause now, so I just let her keep it in the fridge.

Isn't cold PB harder to spread?

The worst I've seen happen to peanut butter is the oils separating out of it. It tends to make it taste worse, but it's peanut butter so it's still all good.

The creamy PB has pretty much the same consistency warm or cold. But the chunky PB is harder than hell to spread when cold...

Not over toasted bread 🙂

You can't say the same for frozen butter. 😀

I do. I don't eat it that often so I keep it in the fridge. As for spreading it, well I always eat it with a spoon as is, so I don't have to worry about that. 🙂

On a side note, has anyone ever had any fresh peanut butter just made at the factory? When I was a kid I went on some school trip to a peanut butter factory (don't remember which one but it was one of the name brands) and that fresh, still warm peanut butter was the absolute best thing I had ever tasted.

I keep mine in the fridge. Warm peanut butter tastes like crap, IMHO. It's not that difficult to spread on a piece of bread anyways, even though I prefer the chunky stuff.

As far as the OP is concerned, if the peanut butter was refrigerated, I wouldn't worry too much about it going bad very soon. I don't eat peanut butter sandwiches all the time so I usually have a open jar in there for at least a month at a time without it getting rancid or otherwise spoiling.

Processed peanut butter is one of the worst foods to eat in general because of all the stuff they put in it to keep the oil from separating and such. Just had a guy on the radio this morning they interviewed that listed Peanut butter (skippy, Jif, etc) as one of the top 10 worst possible foods you can eat.
