Peaceful Spirituality

I find myself longing for something greater than myself, and feeling empty at times because I lack that. Perhaps it's human nature, or it might be something more. I honestly don't know.
I don't necessarily wish to worship something so much as have set ideals and something to strongly believe in. But I also wish, however irrationally, to pray to something. I believe ideas and thoughts have unseen power and can manipulate surroundings and state of mind.
But being that I want it to be greater than myself, I cannot seem to abide anything I create myself. I need something that was here before me and will be here long after I am gone, if that makes any sense.
Any ideas on a religion or spirituality that can fulfill those desires in a peaceful and thought provoking way? Something that might have affected or changed your life?
Oh, and no cults please.

My wife and I started taking our kids to a Unitarian Universalist church.

It's basically a church for people who are seeking or are uncomfortable with the dogma of more organized religious practice. There's a bit of a Secular Humanist spin, but it's just because those people get really upset when you talk about God. 😛

I think of myself as a very spiritual but irreligious person and I enjoy the UU community.

My congregation is about 25% gay and that's not unusual.

Christianity is a peaceful religion, but it gets a bad reputation from many who claim to be Christian. I don't really know how to tell you to find a good church, if that is what you want, because there are so many of them out there that I think are doing/teaching the wrong things. You might be better off reading a good translation of the Bible on your own. Then when you have questions you can find intelligent "real" Christians who can help answer them.

buddhism sounds like it might be for you.

QFT!

I can't go along with the 5 precepts:
1. To refrain from harming living creatures (killing).
2. To refrain from taking that which is not freely given (stealing).
3. To refrain from sexual misconduct.
4. To refrain from incorrect speech (lying, harsh language, slander, idle chit-chat).
5. To refrain from intoxicants which lead to loss of mindfulness.

1. I want to eradicate anything with more than 4 legs from my household
2. no warez?
4. I enjoy swearing and bullshitting with people
5. no alcohol/marijuana use?

I have been taking some courses at The Haven that have really helped me when I have been struggling with exactly the same thoughts.

I especially found their Come Alive program has profoundly changed my life.

1) you can catch bugs instead of stomp them out

2) if the warez are freely given its cool?

4) its not so much swearing i bullshit but just being over all negative in your speech and thoughts

5) moderation my friend. Do you really need 15 bongloads in a row?

again you can use buddhism as a guideline you dont have to be a stringent follower like a monk.

I hear so many people say they are buddhist. It's almost like it's becoming a trend.
I already follow some of those things. I don't smoke, or use drugs. I do drink though.
I don't kill things. Well, except mosquitos and sometimes ants. But only if they bite me first. But nothing else intentionally.
But I do lie occasionally and I have the mouth of a sailor.
I believe alot of strange things.

bardonian flavored
hermeticism

i love buddhism of all flavors and the triple gem is worthy of reverence in my opinion but hermetics is better for me. there's just not enough teachers for either in most areas.

edit: and if you're really really ambitious, try reading these

here's a snippet:

"Worship must alternate with service, work should alternate with play, religion should be balanced by humor, profound philosophy should be relieved by rhythmic poetry, the strain of living should be relaxed by the restfulness of worship"
