What a decision, but this has been a fvcked up year as it is. I have no clue what I'm doing with my life. I'm a junior in college and I'm thinking about switching majors for a third time. I have no idea how I'm going to pay for the 3 years after my scholarships run out. And most of all I want to get out of the hell hole that is Louisiana. My crazy ass solution:

Peace Corps

I had never thought about it until my mom mentioned it earlier. She was like UglyC, what are you doin man?! Have you ever thought about the Peace Corps? I think you just need to go off and find yourself.

And then I'm like damn, that's not a bad idea at all. So now I'm thinking about signing up. Anyone ever been involved in it or know anyone that has? Bad/good experiences? I'm going to try to talk to as many people as I can about it, and if I do decide to go it would not be until next year sometime, but I'm definitely thinking this could be a good thing.

Anywho, am I crazy?

both of my parents were in the Peace Corps after college (it's where they met eachother). they've had nothing but good things to say about it. very hard, but very rewarding.

Without knowing you, I'd give you a maybe.

Wildly magnanimous life-changers make great summer vacations but aren't so great when you contract yourself out for a term measured in years. Maybe saddle up for a short-term volunteer mission in a foreign country before you decide to go all-out...

That said, it's no one's decision but your own and as it's a very important one, put a lot of soul-searching behind it...and no matter how much you prepare yourself, it'll be the little things you never thought you cared for that you'll miss the most.

Is the only short term volunteer programs with churches? I want to go and help people, but I don't think I could really do the church mission thing (or do you have to preach when you go, cause if I can just go and help then thats a maybe).

I never really considered myself to be a wildly magnanimous life-changer, but I guess I am lol. To be honest though, I never tried or went to class AT ALL while I was in CS so I fvcked that up, switched to graphic design cause it was easy and I'm good at art and I hate it, so now I'm thinking about physics. I just recently decided to turn my life around and fly the straight and narrow, but I'm just not sure what to do with myself.

Also I'm a lil skinny lazy beeyatch, so I'm guessing that is going to change real quick.

Also, my hair is falling out at an alarming rate and I'm afraid I may have to shave it here before too long, so hopefully I can go somewhere and bulk up and get a nice tan and maybe one of those AE necklaces made out of rope and have a safari look or something. That's way off topic though.

What little I know of the Peace Corps leads me to believe that, while very noble, it's not something I could likely endure. I have nothing but respect for those who join.

I think it's a bit strange that you want to take an academic break by going into physics; usually it's the other way around. Do you have any genuine interests? Something that excites you?

Sorry about the hairloss problem.

So....

How was it?!

And Descartes, physics has always been my genuine interest, I just unfortunately didn't go into it. And while I love art and am great at it (yea yea big head), I've realized I absolutely hate graphic design.

But aren't there plenty of opportunities do more of the artwork side of graphic design (than the layout, typography, etc. stuff) in design companies, advertising agnecies, etc.? What careers are there in physics? Wouldn't the main career path be in academia or research?

Early hair loss = high testosterone = sexy.
(shave it all off, or clip short, no comb overs, imo :)

I have been thinking about joining peace corp since I graduated high school. I will probably join them and serve after I graduate. right now, I am not a citizen yet, so they won't take me.

does anyone if it is hard to get in the peace corp or then always accept volunteers?

Well I am currently a Junior and will graduate Winter 2006. I am in the CIS program at my university (subset of business school). It looks like on the Peace Corps website that they really need it people. I have more or less dreamed of doing something amazing like implement technology into the third world in order to make the world a more even playing field.

So my question is, anyone know how employers view a 2 year peace Corps excursion focusing on Systems Design, or other IT related area ? My fear is that I join the corps, where I'm out of the states for 2 years, I come back and no one wants to hire me because I have not been participating in American Industry for the past 2 years.

Or would the corps give me a competitive advantage when it comes to being hired ?

I can see the immense rewards it would offer, but I would like to go into it know I am not jeopardizing the rest of my career. I can see either side of the coin. Any thoughts ?
