I have been waiting to purchase a PDA for a long time now. I have a horrible memory and forget almost everything I do not write down. I am also the type of person to balance a checkbook on pieces of paper in my vehicle that get lost randomly and get. I have been building (and sometimes selling) custom computer for a few years now so I am pretty tech savvy and like to mess with new technology. A PDA will be not just something to keep me organized and out of trouble, but a new toy to play with as well Whichever PDA I purchase will likely become an integral part of my daily life, though I do not have any specific plans for what I would do with one.

I have not used either the PocketPC or PalmOS platform more than a couple times each to figure out which would be better for me. I set a limit on myself of $175 after rebates/promos. Currently I have a Sony CLIE S320 on order from Dell that will not ship for about three weeks so I have plenty of time to cancel.

Recently, I have found good deals on the B&W Compaq 3135 ($150) and the Jornada 525 ($150) for the PocketPC platform. The Compaq looks interesting because I can upgrade it to PocketPC 2002 for free, it has the CF jacket and good support. Also, the screen is a much higher resolution than the CLIE, the unit has more memory overall and I like the Compaq design. The Jornada 525 is going to be on sale at Best Buy this Friday and has a 256 color screen. I do not know much more about the unit than that and the fact that there is no place to put the stylus.

I know these topics have been beaten to death but finding direct comparisons between low price products like these is hard. Anyone feel like tossing up ideas as to what the best/most usable unit would be? The system controlling the PDAs wil be my Celeron 800 BX motherboard WinXP system. Are all the units fully compatible?

Also, can I run programs from the CF cards in the Compaq unit, or do they need to be in the local RAM? Only having 16MB of RAM could be an issue depending on how many programs it woulc hold. This would not be an issue if I could just put programs (and not just files) on CF cards.

All of the above will work fine with WinXP. I have a Compaq 3135, and I really like it. The HP Jornada is a real good buy, but there are two things that suck about it. The stylus is poorly designed, and there's no place to store it in the PDA. If you purchase a separate hinged screencover, then it comes with a place to store the stylus. But still, it's not all that convenient.

Second, it depends on what exactly you need the PDA for...

If basically all you need is a data organizer (contacts, calendar, notes...), then a Handspring Visor or Sony Clie (both with the PalmOS) would be my recommendation.

If you crave more (mp3 player, better Word and Excel, etc...), then I'd recommend the iPaq.
