PDA which one to get?

well im looking to get a PDA: palm pilot, pocket pc, for christmas from my grandparents. <=400$. (yes i changed it)

what i need is the basics, organizer, everything. color would be nice, but not sure if its in the range.

also needs to be wireless capable so when i go to purdue i can use it, (802.11b)

i have no idea what is good in the palm world.

MIKE

I have a Palm VIIx that is now collecting dust. The wireless on it was ridiculously slow and palm.net cost $10/mo. (it's now apparently $19/mo. minimum). Look up the successor to the VIIx... I doubt it's improved in terms of practicality.

Get internet on your cell phone if you need it that bad. If you need a scheduler also, those smartphones (I'm testing a Treo 600 right now) are out of range for $150... but they are your solution.

None of the units from Palm will fit your criteria if you want wireless access with that sort of budget. The only model from Palm with built-in WiFi is the top-of-the-line Tungsten C which is $400+. The rest feature BlueTooth only.

The best value for money models from Palm at the moment are the Zire 71 and the Tungsten E. Neither have WiFi and both are already outside of your price range.

The ones from Sony won't be much better either.

None of them are in your price range either. You can add WiFi to both Palms and Pocket PCs using CF WiFi or SDIO WiFi. It should be easier to do that for Pocket PCs though, since drivers can be a problem with Palms.

so what prices am i looking at for a pocket pc? im just wondering, i dont know how much my grandparents will spend, but i think they would spend a decent amount if necessary.

MIKE

Do you carry a cell phone too ? I'm wondering why you're looking at potentially carrying 2 separate devices.

how about pocket pc's?

or is there a way to just get a regular palm/pocket, and later add wi-fi to?

MIKE

If you want WiFi PocketPC is definitely the way to go.

Check out the Dell Axim or iPaq 1935 for $170 from OfficeMax.com ($250 - $30 off $150 coupon - $50 rebate).

i have a cell phone, but i will need to use the pocket pc as an organizer, and to browse the internet if i needed something quick, and games etc. celly will be for easy communication.

i think i am going up to BB right now to browse stuff and see what is out there.

I would read this.

ok, so the 4155 is the best one out there huh? no rebates around for it? (rossman, i know you gotta know something)

MIKE

Yes the 4155 is highly recommended, if I were you I would buy that.

Also consider the Dell Axim the new X3i is smaller and has built in WiFi ... the previous model X5 has both CF and SD slots which is nice but it's a little bulkier. The X5 @ $269 is a good deal.

If you want the best, go for the 4155.

the axim seems nice, which has better battery life though?? also, does the ipaq come with more, or does it cost more w/ just the different weight, and name, and layout?

how long would these last if i also bought a cf card, that i put some mp3's onto and listened too????

MIKE

Just got an Ipaq 1930 for ~$200 shipped overnight (AR) from hpshopping.com. I've been using it for the past four days, and I love it. I wasn't a PDA person beforehand, but I really see the value now.

That being said, the 44xx series sounds like a good deal for your needs. I'm just here to support the Ipaq brand. 😉
