PCTEL modems, do they really suck?

I know what you're thinking, cheap priced PCTEL modems are really crappy and never work right. I firmly believed that too, until lately.
The HSP 56K micromodem is always priced dirt cheap, sometimes free after a rebate. My wife had one about 2 years ago that worked OK, connecting at a steady 45k then one day it dropped to 31k or 28k with occasional disconnects. After trying three of four different drivers with no improvement, I threw it in the parts pile. I had a friend that needed his computer fixed about 6 mos ago and his modem had crapped out among other things. I dusted off the crappy HSP micromodem for testing, found a new driver for it and fired it up. It connected at 50666 every time!
I just recently took all my old parts leftover from my constant upgrading and purchased 2 PCTEL HSP micromodems for $10 apiece. I fired them up and on my first phone line I got 50666, and on my second phone line 52000! This is slightly faster than my Rockwell hardware modem, and the "crappy' PCTEL modems definately feel faster! I actually switched both my wife's and my computers to the PCTEL modems, they are working very well. Here is the link to the updated driver for anyone else suffering with the PCTEL half assed performance. http://www.pctel.com/downloads/drivers_download.htm#micromodem
