PCs on switch w/ COMCAST unable to see each other while online

My friend has COMCAST and pays for two IP addresses.

His machines are on a switch hooked to the modem. They see each other when not accessing the net, and both can access the net.

However, when either machine accesses the internet, they can no longer see each other on the network.

Once they stop accessing the net, they can see each other again.

Any ideas?

would make it easier to troubleshoot if you posted which OS's they were using.

Are the IP addresses on the same subnet, or different ones?

You mean that if one pc is actively accessing the internet, say browsing web pages, network traffic stops?

I'm still waiting to hear back from him on what exactly his setup is.

I'm PRETTY sure his laptop is running XP Pro and his desktop is 98SE.

His laptop is a 1Ghz Duron and his desktop is a PIII500.

I believe his switch is a linksys, but not sure.

I'll fill in more when I hear from him.
