PCMCIA Wireless NIC

Orsorum

Lifer
Just wondering if anyone has recommendations for a good wireless PCMCIA Nic... it'd be used on a college campus; Type II card slot. Any recommendations?

Orinoco Gold is considered by many here to be the top wireless pcmcia NIC

I would definitely buy one if given the opportnity.

I ended up with an SMC one , though, because that's all the store had in stock. Works well though....

Agere Orinoco is very good. Anything that "rebadges" Orinoco is of course also good.

Most of the rest is crap. Don't get me wrong, Linksys and D-Link, etc. are budget values, but you really get your money's worth with Orinoco. In fact, I've seen a lot of poor reviews for Linksys WiFi products. I own both an Orinoco PC card and a D-Link PC card, and the D-Link card is presently gathering dust.

Quality aside, Cisco is too expensive for SOHO use. Reviews I've seen show Orinoco clients to be very competitive with Cisco Aeronet anyhow.

As mentioned, Cisco 802.11b hardware is designed and priced for the enterprise, not the home based consumer. Having said that, if you want the best client card then the 350 series from Cisco is it. Period. The Orinco gives the best price vs. performance ratio and is generally an excellent choice for most circumstances. Yours sounds like one of those circumstances. You'll be happy with the gold or silver Orinco card.
