I got a pcmcia combo USB+firewire card from geeks .com.
The card is apparently from "VIA"
The firewire ports seem to be working, but I have not been able to get the USb port s to work. When I plug in a flash USB drive, the flash drive's light does not turn on.

In device manager, I see addtional USB devices for the PCMCIA card, no error messages, but when I plug in thw flash drive, nothing happens. I tried updating the drivers for the new USB ports in my device manager (with the driver cd for the card in the cd drive)- it updated for one port, and for others it said, "no better drivers".

Is the card defective ?
I tried on another computer, same thing. The flash drive is working fine (tested on yet nother computer).

Found the solution guys - apparently I had to connect a power cable from a USB port into the PCMCIA card. Now its working fine

Exactly. This is because the power budget in a PCMCIA slot does not allow driving the card's own chips AND feeding particularly hungry bus-powered USB devices.
