I'm trouble shooting a Dell Latitude C610 with a PCTEL 2304 MDC modem. I've done the drill: OS updates, driver updates, remove/reinstall, scandisk, defrag, reg clean, the whole ball of wax. The modem works sometimes, then sometimes it is not seen...or the driver doesn't load...or the drivers load but it can't start. General consensus is this modem is a pos. People on the Dell forum have had mb and modems replaced without much success. $20 to upgrade the modem is a small price to pay for piece-of-mind.
I see 3Com 56K PCMCIA modems on eBay for $10-$15 and USR PCMCIA modems at Amazon for $19. Any thoughts or recommendations on PCMCIA modems would be appreciated. The laptop's OS is W2K SP4.
