PCMCIA Ethrernet NIC DOS Drivers

A part of my job is to install PC's from scratch. Some of these PC's are notebooks with PCMCIA (PC Card) Ethernet adapters. The software I install is located on the network so I first need a network connection from DOS. With desktop computers I can easily install NIC's drivers for DOS anbd connect but on the notebooks and laptops I can't install the required drivers, I receive a message that PCMCIA services is not installed.

How can I install the PCMCIA Ethernet NIC DOS drivers to get the card to work?

you'll need the driver for your PCMCIA service/controller.. which is notebook dependant. I'm not sure if Cardsoft is still around provide a universal driver or not.. after that you can install the PCMCIA NIC driver...

does that notebook have to be DOS only? no Win9x?

like esung said, good luck, I had to dealt with that... couldn't get cardsoft which I had for win3x... too bad, so sad... maybe one day I'll find it... and it'll be easier...

The reason for DOS is I like making images of these machines that I keep on a server. The imaging software I use (PQ Tools) runs in DOS. The notebooks I have get loaned out for weeks at a time with different users adding (corrupting!) software etc. What I would like to do when I get the notebook back is format the drive and blast a clean image back on the drive. Beats trying to clean up after sevral users if something is not working quite right. I guess I could create a small partition on the local drive to store the image. Anyway, I'll see what I can do about the PCMCIA controller.

Thanks!

Goto bootdisk.com, they have alot of bootdisks (including network boot disks) that might be able to help you out.

The reason you need DOS is that you cannot make an image of a machine, using Ghost or Drive Image Pro, under Win9x.

Let me know if you need any help, as I have tons of disks that might work for you. Including the Microsoft GOLD disk that you can put any DOS NIC driver on thus allowing you to use one disk for multiple machines, instead of having multiple disks for multiple machines.

Chris,

Thanks for the reply. I got around it. It's notebooks with PCMCIA NICs that was the problem. What I did was boot to DOS, run the disk image sofware, make the image, then boot to Windows and copy the image to the network. Then I made a bootable CD with the image and image software so I can now install the image from CD in a flash.

Thanks again,

Mike

PS. I edited this to say thanks for the link to bootdisk.com. That will come in handy.

I would not recommend burning the OS images into a CD. You might have to span multiple CD's to get one image. You would be better off copying the images to a server. One key point that you will have to remember if you want to do this. If you have CARDBUS NIC's, like the 3Com BardBus NIC, you will have to configure the PCMCIA slots to PIC95 compliant or CARBUS PCMCIA Controller. If you are having problems, I have encountered numerous issues that I have resolved. Let me know if you do.

Chris,

Thanks, so far all of my images have been successful. I have even tested restoring from them. They are generally only about 400MB with all the generic apps we use, so there has not been an issue of spanning disks.

Thaks again for the help.

Mike
