Hi,

My father has a recently purchased Dell 6400 C2D laptop which has an ExpressCard 54/34 slot.

He has a Cardbus PCMCIA wireless adapter which allows him to get wireless internet city wide via our telcom's 1X EVDO CDMA network which he finds useful. It is a Sierra Wireless 580 card: [L]http://www.sierrawireless.com/product/ac580.aspx[/L] as shown in the link.

This card does not fit in the ExpressCard slot as the head is only 34mm wide. I did some research and found out that ExpressCard comes in 34/54 flavours, but the header is always 34mm wide (the 54 cards are just wider behind the header).

My question is, does a device exist to 'convert' a Cardbus adapter to ExpressCard? He bought this thing ~18 months ago for a decent amount of money and wants to continue using it.

Is Cardbus a dead standard now? It seems all new laptops are ExpressCard. My 1.5 year old Compaq is Cardbus but I don't use any PCMCIA devices.

Thanks

Cardbus is not a dead standard. But, it is often not available in new notebooks, and the EVDO cards in Express format are just beginning to emerge.

EVDO

Your dad will have to get a new Wireless BB card when one comes available from his carrier. He should take a look for this . .

Dell

I am in somewhat the same situation with my Sprint PC-5740 wireless Cardbus device. I cn't even upgrade it to the newer Type A (faster) until I have had it for 1 year - unless I want to pay full price.
