PCIe SSD question

For once, not a tech problem, just a question. How far back can PCIe-based SSD, either a pure PCIe card like the Intel 750 or a M.2 mounted on a PCIe card, go back in terms of chipset and OS? My impression is it's possible to use it in a pre-Z97 and pre-Windows 8 system, but not very likely. In theory you could run the Intel 750 on a Z87 system running Windows 7 but not very easily. PCIe SSD seems to require Z97 or higher, and Windows 8 or higher. Am I wrong?

Do you want said SSD to be bootable?

I am not an expert on this area but what's officially required and what's possible are two different things. There is an amazing forum called Win Raid ran by Fernando which covers all manner of drivers, BIOS's and things. He has managed to get full NVMe support on chipsets as old as the 6 series by modifying the BIOS. Full details and guides and so much more can be found on his forum:
