I'm going to be ordering a PCI Express mobo soon, and I heard that you need a special connector on your power supply. What is this connector or what makes a power supply "PCI Express Ready"?

You can get an adaptor (usually from the maker of your PSU), if the PSU you have doesn't have one but you have to look closely because only the newest model PSU are starting to include the PCI-ex connector (and only one at that so SLI people will still have to get an adaptor)

Some of the baords can use either connector. I have a GigaByte 915 board and you can use either the old or new style.

will I have to pay money for this? I don't particularly want to spend more on little adapter things that are ridiculously expensive. Does the connector have a specific name I can look for? I'm getting an ATI X700, so SLI is not a big deal for me.

I found a power supply that has some sort of adapter, but I don't know if it's what I want. This is the motherboard I plan on getting. Can somebody tell me if they're compatible?

also..be aware that the new boards MIGHT have a 24Pin PSU connector, in comparison to the 'older" style 20Pin connector.
They are compatible (sort of)..but it all depends what connectors the pci-ex cards offer. It might have a pci-ex connextor (See adapter)...OR a molex...depends on the card. But having the pci-ex adapter (just in case) for sure cant hurt.

edit: the board you are looking at has the older style 20Pin...so get the adapter (in case it doesnt come with the card, which would be DUMB)...and with two free molex connectord in your case and this adapter you should be fine.

The card I'm getting, an ATI Radeon X700 Pro, doesn't seem to come with it. I really don't want to spend $12 on a stupid little cable, but, someone's got to make money off of my innocence...

Edit: Doesn't look like my video card will use that connector! good! But what about the mobo, will it still run without weird adapters?

PCIe requirements have allowance for significantly more power to be transmitted through the slot than AGP did. As a result, cards that have power requirements that would have needed a separate connector for AGP may not need that 6 pin 12v connector for PCIe.

Some of the motherboard designs seem to have a regular molex connector near the PCIe slot to help with this (rather than route the power from the ATX or 12v connector through the motherboard) The Soltek you linked to does not seem to have this. They appear to be routing the power through the motherboard layers.

You should be good to go with no extra connectors.
