PCIE network card works in any PCIE slot?

I may be running into an issue soon where I need another network card on a computer that only has a spare PCIE slot open (for use with another graphics card). Can I use a PCIE network card in this slot? In other words, are PCIE slots meant for graphics cards backwards compatible with other PCIE cards?

Yes, a PCIE 1x card will work in a PCIE 4x/8x/16x slot. Think of 16x as a speed limit of 75 on the highway. Cars that only drive 50 mph (OP's NIC) can still use the highway.

rosewill's cheapie is great one. everything works out of the box no drivers vista/win7/2008/2008 R2 - gigabit. great for those restore missions

yes, my server has a 1X PCIe intel card in a 16x slot and it works fine. My desktop also has a 1X sound card in a 16x slot. In thearoy it should work but i have seen stories about some mobos not working with anyhting but graphics cards in the first PCIe slot, i even asked foxconn the maker of my mobo if it would work with a 1x card in the 16x slot and they would not gurantee it would work.
