Asus P5N32-SLI 680i
Intel ee6600 Core 2 Duo
2 GB OCZ SLI ready RAM (8500)
Antec PS (650watts etc)
BFG 8800gts 640MB Nvidia
also tried
PNY 7300 (small, doesn;'t have an onboard power coupler.)
Monitor is older MAG 19" with VGA and DVI-A connectors
DVI -D cable used on old system same monitor and BFG 6800GT Nvidia AGP.
I built the system.
Power up, fans, light all come on.
Monitor cannot detect a signal.
Unplugged video card - loud whine on power up.
Tried different slot - no go.
Tried Gigabyte MainBoard 965p - same symptoms.
Put in PNY 7300 - same symptoms.
I don't even see a setup menu, nor a Flash Page - nothing.
Reading about DVI cables - I think it may be the monitor cannot handle the signals? But then I read that DVI -D needs a DVI -D receptor. BUT I use a DVI -D cable with AGP card and DVI -A on the monitor. That's not supposed to work but It has for me. So I am not confident about the monitor/DVI approach - but cannot see another possibility ... except damaged CPU etc.
I never considered the monitor until after I went through all the difficult swapping out of hardware.
Monitor and cable works with older PC. (AGP)
Any thoughts? ( I did connect the 4 pronged ATX from the PSU to the MB)
Also, here are some concerns I had (fears)
1) Did I damage the processor when putting on a Zalman all copper fan/sink. I've assembled at least 5 PCs, and never saw a CPU fried nor damaged, but that Zalman seemed to "squash" down when mounting.
2) What symptoms show a fried motherboard? I see lights, fans, HDD - everything. BUT NO DISPLAY; monitor NEVER detects a signal.
I tried searching b4 posting. Soome things are close but no resolution posted after the questions.
This entire thing has left me feeling like a total boob. I really hope that a monitor that says it's digital or has DVI - D will work.
Has anyone built a PCIe system? Did you have troubles with the monitor and display? Like having to setup with a VGA connection, load OS etc etc and after Windows and PC are running - THEN power down and put a DVI - D cable on? It seems logical, but I NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE B4. I always take for granted that it will output to monitor.
Hope this is clear.
Many thanks.
