Simple question. Title says it all.

Will a PCIe 4x card WORK in a PCIe 8x slot? It FITS in there, haven't had time to test it yet.

That's something that I'm interested in too. Also, I have noticed that in many SLI and Crossfire boards, there is a lack of PCIe and PCI slots. Let's say we only have 1 graphics card installed. Can you plug in a PCIe 1x card into the free PCIe 8/16x slot that is free? Will that work? Or does that slot only work with graphics cards?

Yes, you can do this. PCIE works like that, it just runs at what it can...either limited by the slot or the card.

Same here. Although while I was researching, I found out that some motherboards do not like having non-graphic cards in their PCIe 16X slot--mainly mobos that had only 1 16X slot. Putting a 4X in a 8X slot shouldn't be a problem at all. If you have any further concerns, I would e-mail the mobo manufacturer and ask them to be certain.

Any smaller PCIe card will fit in the larger PCIe slots, ie. 1x into 2x, 4x, 8x, 16 x slots, 2x into 4x, 8x, 16x slots, etc..

Also, I've noticed that many new motherboards have an option in the BIOS to force the 16x slot into 1x mode.

hi, all this is my first question sorry for being a fish.

i want to ask; can i use my Intel SRCSASJV PCIe 8x raid card on my desktop computer which has intel dx58so main board, zotac gts 250 PCIe 16x and on my free pcie 16x slot. so i need this raid card to expand my storage space and improve disk i/o performance. but i can't put them in danger because of this cards too expensive.

regards

Yes, that would work fine.

Although for future reference you should have created a new thread rather than bumping this one. I'm going to close this thread so people don't think it's a new thread - if you have any further questions, please feel free to start a new thread.🙂
