Hi guys. I have the P5W DH Deluxe mobo, and I am pretty sure that it has a PCIe 1.0 slot. Now my question is, that if I want to use the 9800GX2, must I upgrade to a PCIe 2.0 capable mobo???

thanks.

More detail please. :)

I can run a 9800GX2 on my mobo? Would there be any loss in performance?

If you're looking at a high end card like this ofcourse you're going to be bound by your cpu and the rest of your system. There's no point in blowing $600 on a card and not having a monster rig to back it up, imo.

I am actually not. The reviews have me discouraged. I bought the 8800GTX when it came out, but this I am not so sure about. For one thing, it requires a near 600 watt power supply with two 4 pin cables. It just feels bloated.

The 9800GTX is coming in a week, so lets see how that looks.

But right, my question is that will such a card run on a PCI 1.0 system??

The PCIe 2.0 you are talking about is still a 16 lane port so there aren't any physical differences that you have to worry about. The only thing that 2.0 does is double the speed of each lane from 250MB/s to 500MB/s. So multiply by 16 (x16 notation) and you get your 4GB/s to 8GB/s bandwidth jump.

The only thing PCIe 2.0 is doing that the moment is providing more power to the video card through the slot (150W vs 75W for PCIe 1.1) since the current video cards are not even using the full 4GB/s bandwidth for a PCIe 1.1 slot.

Hope this helps to clear up any confusion.

Edit: Yes a PCIe 2.0 video card will work in a PCIe 1.x slot (as I said above, there are no physical differences since the card is a x16 size).

Edit 2: Think of it just like USB 2.0. A USB 2.0 device will work with a USB 1.x port but only at USB 1.x speeds. Same idea goes with the video card exept that the good news for you is that the device doesn't work at 2.0 speeds at the moment so it doesn't matter performance wise.

Yes it will run, it will just draw more power directly from the hard drive than it would on a 2.0 interface.

I think I see what you are trying to say but what you said is not correct. It will draw more power from the +12V rail on the PSU.

Edit: Sorry, didnt see your edit!! I forgive!!!

Yar as other people have said, you will not need to upgrade. PCIe 2.0 is just the next iteration in the evolution; it has twice the max bandwidth of PCIe 1.0. But you don't need to worry because cards hardly use the 8x bandwidth yet, much less 16.
