PCIe 16x slot question

I don't have a PCIe board yet, so I can't try this out for myself. I'm wondering that if I have a dual 16x PCIe mobo, is it possible to use a non-video card (such as a RAID controller) in one of the slots. I'm not planning on doing an SLI/Crossfire setup, but I would love to have a single high end card and an Areca SATA card (PCIe 8x).

Thoughts and/or experiences anyone?
