PCI-X Video Cards?

Hi all,

In the AnandTech article on Opterons, they used a GeForce4 MX 400 that was referred to as a PCI card. I just bought an Opteron for my new desktop at home <wicked grin> but, with only 1 PCI slot... the rest are PCI-X and it isn't physically compatible with PCI... a PCI card will not fit in the slot, so it's not backwards compatible. :( (If it matters, I got the Tyan mb).

So now I have the option of using my sound card w/onboard video (which is lousy at UT.. I'm back to software rendering!) using a decent (PCI) video card w/no sound!

Since the Anand review pictured a PCI-X card, somebody must know where to get them (I hope)... of course it could've been an early preview item...

if I can't find one, I'll probably see about a USB sound "card".

Any hints? TIA

I hate to say this, but you really shouldn't have bought an Opteron if you're planning to play games. I don't know of any existing PCI-X video cards.

He chose...... poorly.

What movie is that from? :)

Ya, Opteron is server platform. Newest technology is kewl, but in this case not great for gaming.

To answer the question, I think ATI and nVidia might have mentioned PCI-X in their roadmaps already, but I don't expect any consumer/gaming cards for a while. You might be able to find a pro card sooner, but it will probably be beaucoup $$$ and not be very optimized for games.

Indiana Jones and the last Crusade.

Anyway...

I thought PCI-X was backward compatible w/PCI but PCI-Express was not. Am I wrong here?

Okay, yet another question... most listings (pricewatch, etc) don't seem to be listing voltage or form factors.

Any idea where to buy a 3.3 volt video card? I bought a GeForce4 440mx 2/64meg for $55 already and would like to replace it with something of that power range, if possible.

Thanks

Found a few at NewEgg... still no specific specs listed but they have pictures and the form appears to be correct.
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=geforce4+pci

specifically, XFX Geforce4 MX440 SE 64MB SDR PCI Model PV-T97L-QT With TV-out Retail and VGA APOLLO GF4 MX440 SE 64MB DDR PCI W/TV Retail

Thanks for the all the help and 'feedback' everyone.

If anyone cares, I didn't buy a dual Opteron to play games on... but if you have one, you ~should~ play games on it! It's just a rule! <heh>

Thanks again, especially shuttleteam.
