pci-x versus pci-e

What's the difference between these two. I have Tyan Thunder K8W board with pci-x so i'm under the impression that it won't be compatible with next gen vid cards.

PCI express is a new serial interface. PCIX is just a faster implementation of PCI. Its usually just used for things like network cards, controllers, and such, mostly on servers. PCIe and PCIX are not compatible.
