PCI Video Card for a Friend

My friend has a 2.4 gigahertz Compaq Presario. Yes, I have taught him the error of his ways, and he's going to be upgrading to something a lot better in the future.

But the key is -- the future.

For now, he's stuck with the machine for another year or so. He has been trying to play some games on it with little success, and I discovered it's because it has some sort of crappy Intel integrated graphics.

The machine also has no AGP slot. That's the real bummer here.

I dutifully have checked out through some local retailers what is available for him in PCI. Basically, it's between a 128mb GeForce 5200 and a 128mb Radeon 9200.

Advice on which is better? Also, since the comp has integrated video, any advice that should be heeded before slamming in the new hardware? Will I have to disable onboard video first in the bios, or should the computer be smart enough to take care of that itself?

I and my friend thank you. Next time, he's letting me pick his components and we're doing a cool custom build. But not yet.

I'll add that what really sucks is that I have a spare GeForce ti4200 just lying around that I would happily give him -- if he had an AGP slot. AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH. :) heh

Get a fairly cheap (about $35-50) Radeon 9100 PCI from Ebay. Aside from an FX 5600 or 5700LE PCI that will cost ~$100, the 9100 is the best PCI video card around. Sadly, they are not made anymore, but you can usually find several on Ebay, and they are much faster than any fx5200 or 9200 PCI.
