Ok ladies and gentlemen, I truly hope you can help me out with my problem, so here goes. I just reformatted my computer. I have a classic athlon on an asus k7m and am running Windows 98. Now, I noticed after reformating that under the device manager a device appeared under the other devices tab called the PCI System Management bus and was showing up as having an error. The computer said under the properties of this device that no drivers were installed. So here is where I need your help. How do I fix this problem? Why did windows not detect and install the drivers for this device? Is there a way I can install the drivers for this device? Thanks for your help everyone, I look forward to your replies!

Do you have an internal modem or a Network card?

If it is an internal modem, then you'll just need to go in there and use the "reinstall driver" option and use the modem setup disk as the source.

It will create a virtual com port for the modem.

Reboot and windows will find everything else.

I have an ethernet card for my rogers@home as well as an internal ISA modem. The modem is ISA though. Should I try installing the drivers for the ethernet card for this device using its disk, or would it be the modem. I thought I had both of these devices installed, but I guess not.

It's most likely the ethernet card if the modem is ISA. Does it work?
If it does then I'd suggest one other thing. Did you reload the ASUS motherboard drivers?

The standard Windows ones will get you up and working but you do need the ASUS ones to be fully functional.

Sorry about taking so long to get back.:)

Hey Man! No worries about taking so long to get back to me. I really appreciate your help! I have a few more questions though in response to your latest reply. When you ask does it work, are you referring to the modem or the ethernet card? Also, when you mention the Asus motherboard drivers, which drivers are u referring to exactly? Do you mean the IDE ones that came on the cd with my motherboard? Thanks very much again for your help. As always I look forward to your reply!

My question about "does it work" was really about the network card but it applies to any card in the system.

The drivers are the ones that come on the CD that comes with the motherboard. The more I look at the problem as you describe it, the more I think that you need to run that disk.

Windows comes with a set of drivers that will get your system up and working. The motherboard has specific drivers that bring extra functionality to the system. These drivers need to be installed. Most ASUS driver CD's these days do it all for you. Run the CD and just follow the install prompts.

If you have already done that and all the cards in the system, let me know and I'll come back and we'll look a little closer.

Ahah! At last it is fixed! On your point that it is most likely the Asus drivers which were giving me the problem, I took a visit to the Asus website. There I found a utility driver file that was specifically for the error that I was having. It was a via chipset registry file. I ran it and restarted the computer. Now when I went back into the device manager and updated the driver for the PCI System Management Bus and told it to search for the best driver it found a VIA Power Management Controller. Finally there are no errors in the device manager. Thank you for all your help, I couldn't have done it without you!
