pci slot fans

I'm not a huge modder or anything and I don't have a dremmel, clipper or even a file, but I wanted to drop the temps down a couple degrees. I wanted to know how well PCI slot fans worked. In another forum, I was led to a FrozenCPU Slot Fan

But no one has given comment on the noise levels. Anybody know?

From my own experience with such items, they suck. At best, you might see a 1-2C drop in temp. That will be with a lot more dB of noise inside the case. Cooling:noise ratio simply blows.

Yup. They just make noise. THink of the layout of your case. You basically have 3 main heat sources. Processor, video card, and PSU. Secondary heat sources will be HDs & northbridge. As long as your video card has an exhaust type cooler ($15 VGA Silencer is one of the best) then you really don't have much heat to exhuast from the lower part of your case. All your doing is making noise.

These are great for people w/ Antec 1080s, 6 tornadoes, etc.

They can drop your case temp 1-2 degrees. It really depends on the layout of your case. In mine, my 6800gt gives off a bunch of heat in the bottom part of my case. So, the pci card fan actually has something worth venting out. Mine is silent. Don't expect a miracle though. On the otherhand, when I upgraded my power supply and got one with a fan intake on the bottom of the supply to vent out the rising hot air, my case temps dropped 5 degrees.

it depends on which you want, the ones that simply blow air out the back dont do much, but things like the 3 fan AGP cooler helped me a lot! I was able to OC my 9600xt to extremes because of the air running over it. And the best thing is, that 3 fan dealy is completely customizable and makes virtually no noise

In another forum, that fan I posted supposedly dropped someone's temps 7 degrees under load (and 2 degrees idle). Isn't that worth it?

Depends on where you're starting from and your case layout.

If your case is running 15C over ambient and is totally cramped with messy wiring, adding a fan anywhere (even in a pci slot) will help. If you've already got good airflow and neat wiring that lets your case sit at 4C over ambient, that slotfan won't help much.

Honestly, odds are if you'd see some benefit from buying pci slot fan, you'd be better off spending that money elsewhere. Especially since their CFM ratings are often wildly inflated.

So what's in the bottom of your case that you're trying to keep so cool?

hehe, I'm one of those people who can't cut real fan holes. Oh, I forgot to mention, this is for a shuttle xpc. That may have been important
