PCI Simple Communications Controller - Problem with Conexant chip Solved

Win2K
Mac Systems internal modem (Conexant chip; came with the puter)

In Dev Mgr PCI Simple Communications Controller is yellowed out (under Other Devices)
Modem is installed & looks OK in DM
Win2K has built in driver which I selected from the list but the modem still wouldn't work
I dl the modem drivers and installed them but Add Modem Wizard didn't recognize any of the files
Query of the modem says it is turned off!? There is no off switch or jumpers

Are these phenomena related (modem and yellow controller)?
How do I activate my PCI controller?

It sounds like the "simple "PCI Simple Communications Controller " is the autodetected modem. Try updating that devices driver with the driver you downloaded.

Hey Z,

As I stated in my original post I tried using a downloaded driver for that model of modem but the Add Modem Wizard didn't recognize the files. The wiz was looking for a .inf file and the unzipped dirver download didn't include any files with that extension. I'm stumped. Usually a downloaded driver pkg works for me. It is a winmodem and I hear that 2K don't like them.

No INF file in the downloaded drivers? thats odd since that is what tells the OS which drivers to load for the device. Did you try hitting the update driver button in Device Manager and selecting the directory with the new files or at least manually selecting the correct driver fron the pick lists?

Yeah, been that route. First I had the wiz try to detect the modem with no success. Then I selected it from the built-in list and it installed fine but when queried it didn't respond. Then I unzipped my downloaded drivers and pointed to that folder during the wiz procedure but no .inf file.

I may try to find another source for the drivers. That will be difficult because it is a Mac System internal winmodem and difficult to find. The system manufacture has not drivers.

Like you, I'm confused.

Is this a new system? Did this system come configured with an OS and did the modem work. What are the system specs?

Yes, this a new outdated Genica (compgeeks.com sells them sometimes) system that came with the modem installed but no OS so modem has never worked. I'm setting it up so that my technologically challenged mom can do the email thing with us kids 🙂

Specs:
Celeron 600
Mac Sys internal softmodem (Conexant HSF Data/Fax, R6793-12, sold by Mac)
2K
stand alone

I have dug up a utility to reveal all the chipset ID numbers. I have also downloaded the Conexant generic HSF drivers for 2K. I am working toward installing them right now. Can you believe it, the generic modem drivers, for a NONFUNCTIONAL MODEM, will not fit on a floppy! Why would they do that?? The standard drivers for this modem fit on a floppy! Guess I'll burn a CD! I hope I'm getting close.

I'm not sure if that modem is compatable with the system. I haven't heard of it. You may want to talk to Compugeeks about it though since it hasn't worked yet.

compgeeks doesn't make or support the system. It's made by Genica but is so outdated that there is nothing on their website about it. Because the system is sold with the modem I feel certain that it is compatible with the firmware and the other hardware. I'm not so sure about the OS. I am gonna try the generic Conexant drivers tonight or in the morn. It's become a challenge 🙂 I'll post my results here.

That would be cool🙂 Is it a 56 k modem? What is the Model # of the modem. Mac Systems lists a varried array odf conexant based modems. Did the drivers you downloaded come form their site?

Strange! I downloaded the drivers for the Mac Sys 560CI modem again and installed over the first set that I had installed previously; same download, same location. Again no file with the extension .inf. But there were several files with no extension displayed and I had not done a 'properties' investigation of any of the files to see their extension.

On reboot the New Hardware Wiz kicked in and this time it recognized the driver; one of the files w/o any displayed extension. It listed the modem under a slightly different name than when I selected it from the list. OK! I set up my connection parameters and tried to connect. Wham! It shut my computer down! I had seen this problem mentioned for Conexant chips on the driverguide forum.

After a reboot I tried to connect again; NO PROBLEM!?

Well, it's workin now. I didn't have to use the generic Conexant drivers. I don't know why but all is OK!?

I did learn a lot about Conexant chips and drivers tho 🙂
