PCI second video card in PCI Express motherboard

I'm trying to set up my son's PC so that he can connect 3 monitors. ( Don't ask, I'm not sure why he needs 3 ).

We had the setup working OK using an Asus A8N-SLI mobo with a single PCI-Ex16 Nvidia 6600GT video card running 2 digital LCD monitors, and a TNT2 PCI video card running an analog monitor. The chipset fan on the A8N-SLI died, which I understand is a common problem, so I got an EPoX 9NPA Ultra non-SLI motherboard as a replacement, rather than take a chance on the Asus failing again. The Epox works fine with just the PCI Express video card installed, but when I plug in the PCI video card, Windows XP Pro refuses to start, and just keeps rebooting. The Epox board has 3 regular PCI slots, and the same thing happens no matter which slot I put the PCI card in. The PCI video card works OK in another PC.

Am I wasting my time trying to add a PCI video card to an Nforce 4 motherboard with a PCI-E x 16 video slot? Is there some reason why this will never work, or is perhaps the Epox motherboard defective? I don't have another PCI video card to try, or another PCI-E card.

The CPU is an AMD64 3500 Venice, using 2 sticks of PQI PC4000 ram, OS is XP Pro.

Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums. The dying fan was a common problem one the A8N-SLi (luckily mine hasn't died yet), even asus saw it, so if your fan dies, you can simply call them up and request another one (provided you have the retail box and stuff)

I already got a spare fan from Asus, and I'm going to put that motherboard in my own PC. The problem I'm seeking help with is to get a second video card working in the Epox motherboard.

I just tried changing the BIOS to look for the PCI video card first, then installed the PCI card by itself, without the PCI-E video card. The PC booted normally, and Windows ran OK. Then I shut down and plugged in the PCI-E card with the PCI card still in place, and Windows won't run. Windows briefly flashes a BSOD error message, but it doesn't stay on the screen long enough to read.

Unless someone can offer some suggestions, it looks like we won't be able to use 2 video cards with this motherboard.
