PCI RAID card problems

Alright I m at a friend's of my dad's house and i m having lots of trouble with this RAID card he just bought and is trying to install. He has a Compaq Presario with a ASUS P4G533-LA motherboard and is trying to add a RocketRAID PCI card, so he can use RAID 1 to mirror the drives. However, I cannot get even one HD to boot from the RAID card. The computer will start up, then go into the RAID utility and detect the devices fine; however, after that it will say BOOT DISK FAILURE. In the regular BIOS i checked the boot priority. The card doesnt show up there, but the manual said that if it doesnt you can just select the SCSI option which i did; however, no luck. Any ideas?

did you install the OS on the HDD while it was plugged into the card?
OR
did you just plug the working HDD into the card, and assumed that it'd work?
