PCI Modem Troubles

Hi,

I've got an ECS K7AMA c/w Athlon 1.4@1.53 (10.5x146). Could an overclocked FSB affect modem stability?

I have tried numerous PCI modems (and one external modem) and I get the same problem with them all, my machine sometimes has a problem making a remote connection (after dialing....verifying username and password....it disconnects). When it makes the connection is stable, does not disconnect or anything.

Could this be attributed to the overclock? Everything else running rock solid, got good temps etc. Tried numerous ISPs too.

Running Win2K, SP2 btw.

It's doubtful that it's a clockspeed issue, especially if it even affects the external hardware. Are your TCP/IP stacks for the dialup connection set funny?

No, the TCP settings are normal. I did add a DNS server and gateway a few weeks back when I was using my friends ADSL line but I have since removed it and this problem was occuring before I did that anyway.

Someone suggested I try disable multilink connections for single connections in the TCP options, I also did that but it made no difference.

What sort of settings should I have the TCP/IP set to? Is Win2K any different from Win98 in that respect? Is it possible I am missing something?

DHCP server active?

I think it actually is already running (isn't installed by standard), but I'll check when I go home tonight. What other network clients do you think I may need?

BTW, I considered a Win2K reinstall but I've only just got the system setup and configured nicely with all patches/critical updates etc and I would hate :| to have to do it all again. I am willing to if it sorts this problem out but I thought that was one of the big advantages over Win98 with Win2K - not having to format and reinstall to sort out silly little issues?

Many thanks,

Anything else?

<< I just remembered that this problem never occured on the system until i installed a PCI modem, as i was using an very nice but old ISA modem beforehand...

Same here, I had to trash my old ISA modem when I got the Athlon and new mobo.
