After mb, cpu and video card change on my brothers system we decided on a clean install. All went fine except for the modem, my brother has a pci modem, Aztech Systems MDP3858V-E, we downloaded the drivers for it from www.Aztech.com but when installing the modem(choosing have disk to the downloaded drivers) we only get to choose between com1 and com2 or serialport. I know it's supposed to go on com3 since I checked the modem-name and location(com3) before formatting the disk. Whatever we do there's no com3.. buhhuu..

We're running out of ideas. anyone out there who knows what to do?

Forgot: the system o/s is win98.

Most PCs (or motherboards) have 2 COM ports. Are you using either
of the COM ports? For instance, I'm using COM1 for my mouse. My
COM2 is not being used so I disabled it in the BIOS.
You can do this also! When your PC starts up hit the key to enter
your BIOS (I have to hit the delete key at startup, yours may be
different).
Find the COM2 port and change it to disabled.
Save your changes.
Reboot....Now you can install the Modem as on the COM2 port...

Yes there are only two com ports and the modem is not connected to either of them, I'm not to good at these things but since it's an internal modem on a pci slot I think com3 is some sort of virtual com port it uses?? There is no problem with an old slow external USR-modem I tried, just plug it in on com1 and go.. but these pci-modems I don't get. It was running on com3 before the clean install, I'm absolutely positive on that, and on auto-detect the system cant find any new modem connected..
Hmm, gotta check my drivers again.

Solved it!
Win98 had earlier automatically detected "PCI Serial Controller" but not the right driver and was listed with a question mark in the device manager. When "detecting new hardware" I picked "PCI Serial Controller" from the list, then "next" and eventually choose modem and "have disk" and went for the pci3858 driver, that way a new com port was created and now it works.
