If i install one of these, will i see all 8 drives in my bios?

how does that work? they don't take over the onboard channels do they?

please explain

also, i am only running a 50x cdrom on the card, will ATA33 card be enough? or will i see a difference if i get an ATA66 card?

thanks alot

david

Yeah, IDE controller cards are cool, you can run 8 ide devices when you stick one in your PC. No point getting an ATA-33 card when you can get ATA-100 for not much more, that way you can stick a few hard drives etc. on it. I run all my hard drives on seperate channels thanks to my IDE controller, which really speeds up drive to drive copying.

No you cant see it in your motherboard bios, but the card has it's own bios & you can see them in there.

Promise Technologies is the best choice for Ultra IDE controllers. They're priced right and they're virtually easy to install (even Win XP seems to enjoy them!).

PS: BuyComp They ship fast and also have good prices.

Generally, UDMA/33 is enough for CD-ROM's, most of them are equipped with UDMA/33 or PIO Mode 4 interface anyway. But there are no point getting extra UDMA/33 card: get UDMA/100 or 133 instead (even better if it's also with RAID option). I would suggest Promise controllers, too. Extra IDE card acts just like SCSI one: you can't see it from BIOS, but it loads it's own BIOS during boot where drives are listed.

You won't see a difference if you put a cd-rom in an ata66 instead of a 33... unless you have a pioneer 16x dvd which actually runs at ata66... but then again the differences between ata66 and 33 is not even noticeable.
