PCI express

Are the PCI express slot(s) on the new motherboards I am seeing for just video purposes (i.e. a replacement for AGP technology) or is it an interface for other types of devices, such as, say a SCSI controller, etc., etc. ?

Do any of the motherboards have more than one of these slots or is there just one per motherboard ?

P.S. - I did do some initial research on this and so far I have not been able to find an answer.

Thanks.

The PCIe 16x slot is used for video devices.

The other, smaller ones, PCIe 1x, 4x, are going to be used as regular PCI type devices, but I don't see any being made yet.

The last mobo I worked with had 3 PCIe slots, and it was a non-SLi board.

The PCIe 1x and 4x looked extremely small, they were only about an inch or two long.

You could make a x16 Sound Card if you really wanted to. PCI-E is the natural evolution of PCI. Far higher transfer rates, independant slots, probably lots of other improvements that I'm not aware of; it's long overdue. My MSI Diamond SLI board only comes with 2 x16 slots and three regular PCI slots. Some have combinations of x16, x4, and x1 and there are probably other combinations out there.

As soon as they come out with all PCI-E motherboards and a decent selection of PCI-E cards, I'll switch over.

PCIe will replace PCI eventually.

However almost all devices are still built as PCI cards because not everyone uses PCIe yet, give it another few years and most new cards (TV, audio, SCSI, network, USB/Firewire etc.) will be PCIe.

What is it for ?

For a while 😉...seriously it's just a faster proticol and evoultion as mentioned just as ISA-PCI-AGP(vid Only) now PCI-e...with PCIX also being another type of PCI:
Original PCI.
Wide PCI.
Fast/wide PCI.
Fast/wide 3.3-volt PCI.
PCI-X.
Narrow PCI-X.
PCI-Express x1.
PCI-Express x4.
PCI-Express x8.
PCI-Express x16.
