hi all

Just wondering if there would be any advantage to getting a PCI Express soundcard, as I have had my SB Extreme Audio for a few years and looking to replace it.

thanks

Not specifically an advantage of PCI express, but one would hope newer cards are higher quality in general (but some/many are lower quality, for sure)

It really is all about the components on the card, not the bus it uses. PCI might have a tiny bit more overhead due to latency inherent in the lower bandwidth, but I doubt it would outweigh simple driver quality differences.

PCI-e would be the way to go because the pci bus is going to be extinct and definitely if the card in question is from Creative - because of CL's constant ineptitude with the snap crackle pop issue stemming from their broken pci bus mastering implementation (from the SB16 right up to their current cards).

You'll be forced to upgrade soon when PCI disappears completely. But there isn't a lot of point replacing a perfectly reasonable card before you have to.
