PCI-express slots

Hi all,
I was wondering if it was possible to run a PCI-express x1 card in a full length x16 slot (albeit only having 4 lanes) designed for graphics cards?

I've never done it but from what I understand, it'll work fine.

Assuming the slot works according to spec, it will work completely fine. There are anecdotal reports of this sort of thing not working with some motherboards, but I've never seen anything solid to back them up.
