PCI Express backwards compatible on the data chain?

Would it be possible to insert an X16 graphics card into an X1 slot?

Wondering for multi-monitor purposes. Could you put an X300SE into a 1x slot?

You can put an x16 slot onto a PCI-1x channel, but you have to have the right sized slot.

The way current motherboards with dual PCI x16 slots are putting one slot on a 16x channnel, and a 16x slot on an 8x channel.

But you can't put a card with 16x connector into a 1x slot.

So the nature of PCI-E is that it will utilize any channels it has avalaible without incident but the size of the slots is the limiting factor?

Bah. Do you think they'll ever make X1->X16 risers?
