PCI Express and Why Nvidia, ATI and AMD are failling to deliver!

So I'm trying to replace my shuttle SN41G2 which I gave to my mom. Looking for that slightly above average in price and performance gaming PC. But low and behold, nothing ecists on the market!

Lets start with where gaming begins, graphics cards.

I bounce and rebound (bounce and rebound) over to Newegg to see what they have to offer.
Well as you know none of the DX8 cards or the 5*** series or 9**** series from Nvidia or ATI respectively produce an enjoyable gaming experiance on the latest and greatest games for the same price point that the 6**** or *** series from Nvidia or ATI would. You have to get a 5900 or a 9700 to get somewhat decent performance. Onward to the midrange 6*** cards, but wait a second NONE OF THEM ARE AGP. All of ATI's and Nvidia's midrange cards are PCI express! Humpf.....ok

So I bounce and rebound to Newegg's mobo section and find a total of three AMD motherboards that will accept a pci express graphics card, one the Asus K8S-MX has a decent price tag, but with absolutely no reviews, it using a sis chipset...its hard to get that above average feel out of it. No overclocking, and having to buy another sound card and what not to replace the onboard starts adding cost. The next two motherboards are a little more expensive...and they are 939 boards. Jeebus. So the cost of getting my PCI express goes up at least 20$ from the motherboard, and then when I look at processors, there is no way to get a nice 3000+...I gotta spring at least 240$ to get a 3200+!!! A full 60$ above the price of a 3200+ thats a 754!

AMD needs to start pushing motherboard makers to launch more PCI express 754 motherboards...we've seen the performance numbers and 754 performs 5% slower than the 939 models. Grr...
Nvidia and ATI needs to push for at least ONE Agp 62-6600 midrange card.

Sigh...damn I'm a cheap bastard <begins whining> I want my cheap high performance computers back!

The days of "cheap high performance computers" may be over (or near it). 🙁

I'm a cheapass too, so I feel your pain. 😛 🙂

AMD is failing to push their partners to deliver choices on both socket types out there.

There really is a mess out there in terms of what to choose if building a new computer.

Wait a minute... you're telling me that you can't find AGP? 😕

Do you mean they're sold out or they're just not on the market? Whenever I do searches, I get like 10 AGP cards to every 1 PCI-e card.

Where are you searching? I'm trying to get a PCI-e card and you seem to have spectacular luck in finding them. Newegg, in my searches, has tons more AGP than PCI-e.

AMD wont psuh in 754 cause it wants to end it. and go to zipzoomfly theres a 3000 there for 161 and a 3200 for 207

if they want it to end, y did they start it in the first place? i thought they wanted 754 to be the budget platform, for semprons?

6600 GT's seem to only come in AGP, that's how common they are. The Athlon 64 3200+ costs about $200 for either the retail or the OEM version from either Newegg, ZipZoomFly, or MonarchComputer.com.

I think your (mis) information is a little far off, man.

hmm..., in response to your looking for a cheap gaming rig. I just got one a month ago from dell.
My system uses the new Intel 915G Express Chipset
Dimension 4700
P4 3.0GHz HT LGA-775 1mb cache
512mb DDR2 PC-3200
Gigabyte 128mb 6600GT PCIe(Of course it did not come with it. It came with a Radeon x300 SE)
80GB Maxtor HD
48x CD-ROM
Windows XP Home
17" LCD Monitor
Logitech X-530 5.1 Channel Speakers
2 Years On-Site Warranty

I paid a total of $827 to dell including shipping + tax.
+$827
-$100 MIR
-$200 Sold my 17" LCD
-$45 sold my x300
+$165 Gigabyte 6600GT
+$55 Logitech x530
Grand Total: $702

I think that is an awesome deal for a gaming system.

Oh yes. I forgot to mention. I normally build my own desktops, but this time Dell's deal costed almost $200 less than if I bought everything myself from newegg. As much as I dislike buying pre-built computers, this deal was too good to pass by. For reference purposes, I have built/upgraded my own and my families computers (3). All the laptops that my family owns (4) are white paper notebooks. This time I decided to go with Dell and I have yet to be disappointed.

Non-expensive gaming computers are existant. Just gotta look for them =D

Actually you kind of got ripped off.

You will never be able to OC or modify those components as they are all proprietary.

The P4's are not good at gaming and cannot compare to the A64's. I would bet the house that the 512mb DDR is not running in dual channel thus you take a huge performance hit.

Not a bad system but definately not competitive gaming system.

I would be willing to bet and OCed AXP-M 2400+ @ 2.5ghz could simply massacre that. And it uses less power and less heat while doing so.

Another example of why you dont get dell.
