Hi I'm a Noob, so bear with me (how many times have you herd that?)
I just purchased a laptop for work related needs, its an HP dv1680ca, it has one of the new Core duo's (T2400) and PCI-E, what I need to do is run it "true wireless" so i bought an "air card" signed up on a plan and that should be all she wrote, but I wouldn't be here if that was the case, The air card is your normal PCMCIA ( Made by kyocera) the problem is the card slot on the side of the laptop is PCI-EXPRESS, and the connection point in the slot is about half the size, I live in Vancouver Canada, and the people at the wireless network tell me they have no idea if a when there will be an express card ( infact they had never herd of it until I showed them) this means it will be at least 1-2 years before the arive, so what I need is an adapter that changes PCMCIA cards to Expess cards or I'm thinking I'll have better luck finding an external PCMCIA card slt, something that plugs in USB or IEEE 1394. MY familly owns a couple of Tim Hortons coffe/donut shops here and Networking is not an option, we have a very extensive security system in all of the stores, each store has 24 cameras that run off a digital serve, the tills are linked into them, and and so is Head Office, combine this with an office no bigger than the average bathroom and the interferance is to great to wireless network, the other reason I need it wireless is we have a cabin about an hour north of here where there are no phone lines and no cable, I had to put a Satalite Dish in just to get T.V. but work needs constant attention even the cameras are set up on a remote site, so I can view them from anywhere. I have been fighting with the place I bought it from for two weeks, not for my money back but you think the place who just sold you a $2000.00 (after the add ons) laptop then sold you a useless air card to go with it would want to at least help you find a solution, make a few phone calls, check with the manufactures, something, not look at you and say "sorry we dont have anything like that your out of luck" then turn and walk away from you, If you live in Canada DON'T buy a computer from London Drugs, If any has a solution, or an idea, PLEASE post it, My frustration level is about maxed and I dont know what to do!!!

Sierra Wireless is building them in the states, they are available through the cellular vendors. Have you checked with cellular vendors up there?

Yes I have although my options are limited Telus, or Bell, arethe only companies that ofer wireless internet, in both places the guy gave me "that look", you know the look when you walk into a computer store and ask a relativly simple question, and they look at you like you have just ask for thier theory on quantum physics, usualy followed by a "Uuum, I don't think we carry that" thats the look, I was reading an article at the Bell website abput a new stand alone wireless modem that only needs an AC outlet, Satalight service that runs through your WI-FI same princable as hotspots, without having to be Starbucks to get it, but it has a max 3mbps speed and no coverage outside the city, I wonder if it is possible to buy one through Sierra and hook it up through telus or is it like cell phones, where you cant interchange companies

I am eternaly grateful, on your advice I decided to check sierra wireles, turns out they are already working with Telus distributing PCI express mini cards in Vancouver, have been since January of this year, those lazy, you know whats, couldnt bother to look it up, 3 different people I talked to thier said they had no idea that the product even existed, yet there it is in black and white roll out on it was January 2006, My father owned a Ford dealership in Toronto before we moved here and I remember the salesmen would have to watch videos and do these write-up worksheets on all the new cars, they had to know exactly what was in each car, youd think that would be required in the Computer industry, never under estimate the power of commision, anyway thank you I would have never stumbled across it had you not clued me in to Sierra, here's the link for anyone who is interested http://www.sierrawireless.com/news_even...d=D1255513-ABF6-46BE-9394-2627E6722E74

I had to return a Dell notebook someone in my organization ordered because it didn't have a PCMCIA slot for an air card. Very annoying.

Looks like you are going to have to wait for the Sierra wireless card. :(
