PCI E video card choice/help

I'm looking to put together my first rig and after much research my biggest dilemma is what vidoe card to choose. I plan on running and AMD 64 3500+ Venice on and Epox 9NPA+ ultra Mobo. I only game a little, but I want the option to play a bit if i want to.... I dont have the time to game like aI once did.. My wife and I are expecting and I want to have the option to do some good video editing once the little on is born. I will also have a Diamond tv tuner/PVR card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815117702). So i'm looking for somthing that will give me a pretty smooth play back. I'm looking to spend about $150.00 on the video card and was thinking something allong the lines of a GeForce 6600 or 6800 or and x700 or x800. I know that the cards have suffixes (GT, GTO, Pro, XL) and I'm not really sure of the differences. Any help would be aprreciated.... this is my first post to the most helpful forum EVER!

As for smooth video, Purevideo from Nvidia beat Avivo from ATI although they said Avivo could improve with driver revisions.

The rest is pretty subjective. Some people whine about jagged shadows in Far Cry on Nvidia cards.
