PCI-E stuck at x1

Hi all,

Recently been having problems with games running extremely slow - benchmarks show the system stable and temps okay but anything 3D is running at a fraction of the normal framerate. GPU-Z confirms my x16 PCI-E 2.0 slot is stuck at x1 1.1 speed. It might be some change in the BIOS I made, a driver problem, a motherboard problem... I do tinker with the old beast a bit:

Gigiabyte P35 DS3P
Q6600 @ 3.0-3.4 ish
8800GT

I've tried different drivers, loading defaults in the BIOS and making various tweaks, reseating the card etc - all the obvious things and no luck.

Any help is much appreciated!

Bump? Still haven't found the solution to this - can't even play L4D2 at a decent speed :/

Could it be my mobo has finally given up? Could it be the chipset? A damaged PCI-E slot?
