PCI-E speed

I thought default PCI-e speed was 100mhz. But if I set it at 100mhz on Gigabyte 945-s3 , it won't POST. I think PCI-e is the bottleneck for my conroe ocing setup.

anyone have an idea?

Bottleneck is what you call the part of the system holding back your performance. Do you mean it's holding back your overclocking? Usually keeping it on auto lets you overclock without problems.

so setting PCI-e at AUTO will lock the speed at default speed?

in other words upping CPU FSb will not make the PCI-e speed go up as well?

I have the DS3 board and I've overclocked with it on AUTO and 100 and I couldn't tell any difference. I have it on 100 right now. I'm running at 400x8.

Yeah I'm using ATI card. seems to be that gigabyte boards are not that stable when ocing. Almost hit or miss

thats not exactly true - in fact, gigabyte's ga-965p-ds3 is one of the best overclockers for C2D setups currently.

anyways, i have heard that setting the PCIe bus to 101MHz can help on some boards - i remember hearing that about earlier nforce4 boards, but it couldn't hurt to try it on your board.

little bit offtrack, but what's difference btwn ds3 and s3 ? other than onboard Lan chipset, everything including BIOS seems to be identical.. I don't know why Gigabyte made two very similar boards.. anybody have 965p-s3 with c2d ?

Gigabyte makes very few boards that are good for overclocking. A motherboard that overclocks well is more expensive to make, so they sell fewer of them. That's why yours was cheaper, and isn't going to overclock very far.
