I guess I've read so much info I've managed to confuse myself.
I'm planning on going PCI-E, but not 100% sure on the SLI functionality issue.

My goal is to play Doom/MOH/COD/etc. with nice FPS.

Oh, and I am on a budget that doesn't allow two GTs.

1.) Should I go with the SLI and one 6800GT and add another later, when prices drop?
2.) Or should I skip the SLI part and just go with the single PCI-E x16 slot with one 6800GT?

I want a setup that's not going to require that I buy a new motherboard and videocard in the near future.

Thanks in advance.

Pay the extra money probably around $50 for a SLI board. That way, you won't regret it if you end up wanting a 2nd 6800gt. If not, you can still just sell the 6800GT and replace it with a newer card even with the SLI board.

A single 6800GT will get you great FPS in any of those games. The only question is when it is time to upgrade are you going to try and find another 6800GT to go SLI or are you going to go with the new generation of cards. If you are a frequent upgrader go with the SLI, if you go a couple seasons before you upgrade then save some money and get the single card solution. I say this because two generations from now the 2 6800GTs will be a far second place to the new cards. That would be like running 2 GeForce4 4200 in SLI. A single 6800 GT would crush them.

This may be off a bit but know person or site has shown a single game or benchmark that can even think about maxing out (1) 6800 GT I know everyone wants Sli becouse it is new Why? Heck a single 6800Gt AGP still beats 2 6600GT's in sli. plain and simple if a FX 55 can not keepup with a Single 6800 GT save your monies I'm sure there will be a new CPU socket out before there is a CPU that can clam a 6800GT AGP muchless PCI-E is the bottleneck.
