PCI-E in a PCI-E full length?

I hope I am asking this correct. Please bare with me.

I am looking at getting a EVGA X58 SLI Classified motherboard instead of the Gigabyte EX58 Extreme.

I will use my EVGA 8800GTS 640MB card that I have in my X38-DQ6.

I need to add a LSI MegaRAID 8408E which is PCI-Express with the small tab then the big tab. Will this work in the full length PCI-E slot like the 3rd one? Or would it fit in the very top PCI-Express slot and then under that would be the first full length PCI-Express slot for the video card if they won't touch?

Then I would like to get a ASUS Xonar DX audio card too.

P.S. Anybody using this MB and what do you think?

Thanks, JASTECH

So the short PCI-E on the card will work in a PCI-E full length slot?

Thanks, JASTECH

Yeah. PCIe x16 slots are "backwards" compatible with x1, x4, and x8 cards.

PCTC2, Thanks!

I was sure hoping they would be, I just can't think straight with all these meds. Sounds like the EVGA Classified is the way to go then, I hope it is a good MB and the CS they say is top notch and warranty too.

Thanks, JASTECH

Just remember to register it within the 30 day timeframe and BUY EAR (EVGA ADVANCED (cross-shipping) RMA) when they ask, because you can't add it later. It's a great mobo, a bit expensive for what it does unless you own 3x GTX285's and a 9800GT. I live a few hours away from their HQ near LA and I pretty much RMA anything and get it back in a few days. They're great. My 7950GT died a few months ago and since it's so old (and OoS), they sent me a refurbed 8800GT.

I was thining the way things are goin that the extra PCI-Express would come in handy. I figure my EVGA 8800GTS 640mb in the top x16 slot and a Xonar DX in the very top x4 or what ever it is, lol then that would give me some growing room or am I going about it wrong? Maybe the board under the "Classified"?

Thanks, JASTECH

This is a useful thread to me, because I'm going to fit a PCI-E x1 sound card (Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio) in a PCI-E x8 slot on the GA-EX58-Extreme, since the PCI-E x1 and x4 slots are going to be covered by the NB air cooler.

I also found this very informative.

In a nut shell provided the card will physically fit (being the same size or smaller) in the PCI-E slot, then it will work, but it will not necessarily run at the highest speed:

A PCIe card will fit into a slot of its physical size or bigger, but may not fit into a smaller PCIe slot. Some slots use open-ended sockets to permit physically longer cards and will negotiate the best available electrical connection. The number of lanes actually connected to a slot may also be less than the number supported by the physical slot size. An example is a x8 slot that actually only runs at x1; these slots will allow any x1, x2, x4 or x8 card to be used, though only running at the x1 speed. This type of socket is described as a "x8 (x1 mode)" slot, meaning it physically accepts up to x8 cards but only runs at x1 speed. The advantage gained is that a larger range of PCIe cards can still be used without requiring the motherboard hardware to support the full transfer rate ? in so doing keeping design and implementation costs down.
