PCI-E 8x vs 16x with x1900 xt

I'm planning on using the pci4 slot on my ultra-d because I want to keep the chipset fan uncovered (a x1900xt in the upper slot blocks it). If i move the jumpers and change the settings in BIOS, it will go from 16x/2x to 8x/8x. Will I notice a performance decrease with my card from doing so? I've seen the results of people testing this out with older cards (6800/7800 gt), but I haven't seen anything about how it would affect the newer ones.

Thanks

The newer top-end cards will suffer if you do this. If it was an x800xt, I wouldn't worry about it, but the x1900xt is so powerful that it would use more bandwidth than the 8xPCI-e bus could supply.

Are you sure you can't just leave it in the 16x slot? Could you change the chipset cooler?

thanks for the reply.

I think one of the well-known, generally accepted issues people have with the dfi board is how badly designed and placed the chipset/hsf are. I was running the card in the 16x slot but I was getting system temps about 4 deg C higher than when it was in the lower slot.
